Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra
The Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) is a musical group in Reading, Pennsylvania which performs classical orchestral music. Created in 1989, the orchestra was formed by the Education Committee of the Reading Symphony Orchestra (RSO) Board of Directors with the intention of providing experience to local teenagers in the field of classical music. Supported by the RSO and a parent association, the orchestra holds annual holiday and spring concerts, as well as occasional international tours. The orchestra has toured the United Kingdom; French Canada; and Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic in 2001, 2003, and 2004 respectively. The most recent tour was Italy in 2007. ()
For the 2008-2009 season, the orchestra split into two smaller orchestras with one consisting primarily of students in grades 9 and 10 while the other is composed of students in 11th and 12th grade. Peter Brye continues to conduct the orchestra of older students, while Brian Mishler has assumed the role of conductor to the younger orchestra. Mr. Mishler is also the orchestral director at Exeter High School in Exeter, Pennsylvania.
The orchestra for the 2007-2008 season is the largest in the RSYO's history, with 133 members. The concerts for the 2007-2008 season were performed on December 8, 2007 at Reading High School and May 18, 2008 at Schuylkill Valley High School. () Beginning in the 2013-2014 season, Ms. Janifer Dixon assumed the position of assistant conductor, running rehearsals when Mr Brye is unable to attend.
Peter Brye is the founding conductor and Music Director of the RSYO as well as the Assistant Principal Cellist of the RSO. Brye is a graduate of the University of Oregon and the Pennsylvania State University. He taught cello, instrumental conducting, and conducted the University Community Orchestra for 26 years at Millersville University, where he retired from in 2007. ()
